Clearing the Lot for Our New Custom Home

Most of the time, when you’re working with undeveloped land, you will have what is called a “fully treed” lot, and our Lot 6A in the City of Covington was no exception.  Sometimes, because of the moist, tropical weather in Louisiana, the trees and foliage can be especially dense to deal with.  However, because of the timing of getting our permits and building approvals from the City of Covington, a lot of the brush and trees which were being knocked down and dug up were dead in these winter months. Also, with the unusual, drought-like conditions this past summer, the plants and trees weren’t holding onto the ground as tightly as they do when they’ve been well-watered.  All of this made the clearing of the lot for the foundation a little bit easier for our new, custom home.

Clearing the lot involves machinery to knock down the trees, and equipment to remove the trees and brush. Finally, there is equipment to work the dirt (dirt work) to make it manageable for building the home. There’s a lot of moving parts as you can see in these pictures. Sometimes, if it’s a much bigger lot, we will conserve specific trees requested by our buyers who build custom homes with us. We do leave trees wherever possible.

Once everything is cleared, the earth is turned and graded to remove any large branches, underground trunks, roots, rocks, and other hindrances that may interfere with installing a level foundation on the lot. The goal is to smooth out the ground to prepare it for the next stage of the home building process – the lot pad and foundation. Stay tuned to read about and see the pics and the progress as we develop the pad and prepare it for pouring the foundation! Till Next Time…
